Artist bio

Mee Shim was born and raised in Suwon, South Korea and currently resides as a full-time artist in beautiful San Diego, California, United States of America.

Her career started early on: Shim took painting lessons at the studio of the well-known Korean artist, Lee Jung-Ji for three years prior to pursuing her formal education.  Just one year after completing the BFA program at Duksung Women’s University in Seoul- Shim debuted her first solo exhibition at Samsung Gallery in Seoul, Korea in 1997. Soon afterwards, Mee Shim earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Wayne State University in Michigan in 2000.

Shim’s professional accomplishments involved teaching Art at Indiana University, and exhibiting at multiple Art Museums and Galleries in the United States, South Korea, and Europe. Some of those are Monarch Gallery in La Jolla, James Gray Gallery in Santa Monica, Orange County, The Center for Contemporary Art in Orange County, California, both the Merwin and Wakeley Gallery and Andrew Bae Gallery in Chicago, Illinois, the Detroit Artists’ Market, Detroit, Michigan, The Gallery Project, Ann Arbor, Michigan, Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Grand Rapids Museum of Art, Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis, McDonough Museum of Art in Ohio, among many others. Shim has been invited guest lecturer and exhibitor of her work for numerous Universities as well.

Mee Shim’s works are collected by many private art collectors and art museums over the world including Steve Wynn in Las Vegas, Grand Rapids Museum of Art in Michigan, Lutheran Hospital in Indiana, McDonough Museum of Art, O. Ghannoum in United Arab Emirates, and J.Marchant in London, UK.

Shim has been awarded fellowships and artist-in-residencies at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont, and at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, Colorado. Her works were also chosen for Art Exhibition for 12th World Championship in Athletics in Berlin, Germany,

2009. Shim opened a public gallery for her art, Mee Shim Fine Art, in San Diego, California in 2009 and continues producing remarkable works there today.
